4 Elements Consulting has been proud to be a key partner in 4DBaru for the last 5 years. The partnership was a dynamic collaboration of professional service providers delivering high-quality environmental, planning, engineering and surveying solutions across the Northern Territory.

The joint mission was to drive successful outcomes in land development services while creating meaningful opportunities for Indigenous communities. To do this, social impact was created by putting 10% of profits from these contracts into the Gumatj Corporation, supporting employment, training and long-term development for the Yolŋu people in East Arnhem Land.

The Next Steps

Today, the great work having been completed with 4DBaru, has led to 4 Elements adopting a new position, seeking new partnerships with First Nations communities. The focus is on co-developing stronger, science and cultural solutions that foster an enhanced understanding, and use of the natural world.

We are welcoming discussions with First Nations communities in the South East Queensland, Wet Tropics, Darwin Coastal and Arnhem Land bioregions. We recognise biogeographical areas are the lands of multiple, interlinked and ancient Aboriginal lineages, spanning tens of thousands of years of knowledge.

Cape York ecological assessments

Ecological Constraints Assessment (ECA) with 4DBaru

Cape York Aboriginal Shire Councils

Four Elements, alongside 4DBaru, were commissioned by the Queensland Government to conduct ECAs in several Indigenous communities located in Cape York.

The assessments aimed to identify areas for potential development for the Aboriginal Shire Councils in the Mapoon, Pormpuraaw, Hopevale, and Injinoo regions. They focused on identifying flora, fauna and ecological values within the project sites, and the potential ecological impacts that may occur due to vegetation clearing. The associated reports provided detailed assessments of the local environment for community development and ongoing monitoring.

Yarrabah Jetty upgrade

Aquatic Assessments

Department of Transport and Main Roads, Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council

Four Elements provided a Construction Environmental Officer for development of the Yarrabah Jetty in 2021. The officer would undertake site inspections and audits, activities as per the cEMP including monitoring for turbidity, erosion and sediment controls, marine pollutant spillage, complete photo monitoring points for compiling of pre-, during- and post-works photographs to monitor construction, and identifying areas for improvement.

All non-conformances and incidents were reported to the project management team and local authorities, including the requirement to identify corrective actions, record, report and escalate incidents and non-conformances in accordance with the EMP(C), MRTS51 and all permits and legislation. Our team successfully minimised marine plant disturbance and limited further potentially damaging activities required under conditions of approvals.
