Flora translocation involves the deliberate transfer of wild plants, or their reproductive material (seeds or cuttings), from a wild population to another suitable location known as a recipient site. In cases where direct translocation is not viable, propagation is used to grow new plants from collected seeds or cuttings, ensuring successful establishment.

The key aim is to establish a self-sustaining population of the target species in the new location to ensure no net-loss, or better yet, a net gain if possible.

The Process

A Proven Step-by-Step Approach to Flora Translocation Success

1. Protected Plant Survey (PPS)

  • Identify and map plant species to be translocated
  • Obtain permit from the department to proceed with translocation works, either through a translocation or propagation license

2. Management Plan

  • Develop a threatened flora and/or translocation management plan that assesses the flora species’ ecological requirements, locates a suitable recipient location, and outlines key strategies for mitigating impacts on the translocated plants.

3. Translocation and Propagation

  • Remove plants from the existing habitat or collect seeds and cuttings if direct translocation is not viable
  • Propagate collected material into tubestock for later translocation if required
  • Transport plants or propagated tubestock to the recipient site
  • Establish individuals in the new habitat using species-specific techniques to enhance survival
  • Ensure all work is conducted in compliance with regulatory requirements and best-practices

4. Monitoring

  • Periodically monitor and maintain translocated plants until they can be considered self-sustaining (i.e. can survive and reproduce in the wild without further assistance or intervention from the translocation team)

5. Reporting

  • Provide data on the survivorship and condition of individual plants so that results can be compared over subsequent monitoring events as required by the relevant permit

Key relevant project experience

Past completed Protect Plant Survey projects:

  • Navigation Drive Subdivision – Completed the successful translocation of eight individuals of the vulnerable ant plant (Myrmecodia beccarii) from the works area to a designated covenant site where they are surviving (100%) and are protected.
  • Mount Emerald Wind Farm – Translocated six protected plant species: Prostanthera clotteniana, Acacia purpureopetala, Melaleuca uxorum, Homoranthus porteri, Grevillea glossadenia and Plectranthus amoenus, with ongoing annual monitoring in place to determine the success of the management program. A total of 1,100 individual plants were translocated during the project, with the assistance of propagation. Self-sustaining populations established at 15 recipient sites across the project alignment.
  • Tully Falls Road Subdivision – Successfully translocated 13 individuals of the vulnerable-listed orchid Dendrobium fellowsii from the planned works area to a designated recipient site. Ensured 100% survivorship, with flower and fruit production after 24 months.
  • Mount Fox Energy Park – Translocation management plan for the EPBC Act 1999 assessment. A plan that includes a seed viability trial and planting schedule has been prepared and is currently under review.
